Magic Ring (MR) — crochet stitch tutorial
Starts a piece in the round with a hole you can pull completely shut — essential for amigurumi so stuffing never shows.
UK terminology: Magic Ring (same)
How to work it
- Wrap the yarn once around two fingers, with the tail crossing under the working yarn.
- Hold the crossing, insert the hook under the ring, catch the working yarn and pull up a loop.
- Chain 1 to secure the ring (this ch does NOT count as a stitch).
- Work the required single crochet into the ring, crocheting over the ring strand and the tail.
- Pull the tail to close the centre, then weave it securely through the fabric in several directions.
Tips
- 6 sc in the ring is the amigurumi standard. 12 dc is the standard for a granny/flower motif.
- If the centre loosens, re-tighten and secure the tail; a magic ring is not secure until its end is woven in.
