Chain (ch) — crochet stitch tutorial
The foundation of flat pieces, plus straps, mesh spaces and drawstring eyelets.
UK terminology: chain (ch)
How to work it
- Make a slip knot and put it on the hook.
- Yarn over (wrap the working yarn back to front over the hook).
- Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook. That is 1 chain.
- Repeat. Count the V shapes on the front — the loop on the hook is never counted.
Tips
- Keep chains loose and even; tight chains make a curling, hard-to-work-into edge.
- The bump on the back of each chain is the 'back bump' — working into it gives a tidy, seam-like first row.
