Star Stitch (star st) — crochet stitch tutorial
A dense woven-looking texture that makes a plain handbag look designer-made.
UK terminology: star stitch
How to work it
- Over a row of 40 sc: ch 3, turn. Without extra yarn-overs, pull up a loop in the 2nd and 3rd chains and in the first 3 sc — 6 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over, pull through all 6 loops, then ch 1 to form the eye.
- Next star: pull up a loop in the eye, between the last two spokes, in the same base stitch as the previous star's last loop, then in each of the next 2 base stitches — 6 loops. Yarn over through all 6, ch 1.
- Repeat for 19 stars total, leaving 1 base stitch; hdc in that last stitch.
- Return row: ch 2 (not counted), turn. Hdc in the edge hdc, 2 hdc in each of the 19 eyes, then hdc in the top of the starting ch-3 — 40 hdc.
Tips
- Pull every loop to the same height. This six-loop star is not a puff stitch. Use the pattern's edge and return-row instructions to preserve width.
